It's a lot of fun because of how it MAKES people use teamwork, rather than the opposite with games like Halo 2 where folks run off and get their preferred weapon and spot at the start of each game.
You'll hear a lot of folks calling out at the beginning of each round what spell or item they are going to buy, such as Tree of Life (only way to get your health back unless you're an Elf) or Resurrect (revive fallen teammates!).
I suggest starting out as a Human as they are the 2nd fastest (behind the Elf) and start with the most money. ($2500) Most spells cost $2000 and weapons start at $500... so you're starting out pretty well. (btw, if you're dead at the end of the round, you will have to buy weapons all over again...
but spells and technology stay with you for the entire game)
There are three game types:
Raid: 1 Flag CTF format (Artifact instead of a flag) - (shoot and clear the other team's dead bodies and they're gone for the rest of that Round)
Extraction: Neutral Flag CTF format (Artifact instead of a flag) - (Team Slayer format and the only way to clear bodies is with the Artifact)
Attrition: Team Slayer format and the only way to clear bodies is with the Artifact - (Artifact also lets you see where people are in Attrition)
Quick points on other things in the game:
- Dwarves steal magic from other people (on both teams) and can steal "Essence" (magic) from things like Strangle (magic spell) or even a Tree of Life.
- All game types are multiple rounds - the first team to win 6 rounds wins the match.
- Attacks w/ Katanas or the Artifact (once picked up, it's basically the same thing) to the back of opponents will make them bleed out. (unless they get to a tree or have an ally "Rez" them)
