Prayer for the Aged
Today at my uncles funeral this prayer was in the card they hand out at funerals. I think it fit him very well as he is one of the top role models in my life. He was a great man, generous, kind and loving. Always upbeat and supportive of others. Never saw him grumpy in my life. So, I just thought I would share this as a more than a few of us are at or getting close to the "Aged" point in life.
PRAYER FOR THE AGED
"Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself
that I am growing older and will someday be old.
Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly
from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something
on every occasion.
Release me from craving to try to straighten out
everybody's affairs.
Keep my mind free from the recital of endless
details-give me wings to get to the point.
I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of
other's pains. Help me to endure them with patience.
But seal my lips on my own aches and pains
they are increasing and my love of rehearsing
them is becoming sweeter as the years go by.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it
is possible that I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet, I do not want to be a
saint-some are so hard to live with-but sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil.
Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful,
but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it
seems a pity not to use it all-but though knowest,
Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.
He used to keep this prayer in his Bible and now I will do the same as it really hit home with me.
He made up a business card after he retired that on the front simply had ROMEHO with his name and phone number on it. ROMEHO stood for "Retired Old Men, Enjoy Helping Others. On the back was this verse; Ecclesiatstes 3:12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.
This is my Uncle. He was 82 when he passed on.
