Nah I think it will be the opposite. The redesigned Air will have a slot disc drive.

Why? Really, I very rarely use a disc drive anymore. When I do, it is because people ask me for it on a CD. I could easily just send them the files/music/pictures in an email attachment. I really do see CD's going out just like floppies did.

Memory cards could easily replace a DVD. For laptops they probably will.

Your on a plane with your MacBook Air, you want to pop in a DVD but you can't.

You just purchased the latest version of Photoshop which has two installation DVD's ... but you can't install it because you don't have a disc drive.

You want to play a disc based game, but since there is no drive you can't play.

Those seem like some pretty good reasons to me to have a disc drive.

True, but all that media could be available on flash one day...never know.

i believe everyone here has a computer so if they got an air you can use the cd drive on that computer to install whatever you want. And if you haven't heard of bittorrent for movies then maybe you still need the dvd drive. with that said it's too expensive still maybe in about a year i'll consider it.

I'm just trying to argue the ridiculousness of not have a disc drive ... and advocating piracy as an alternative means to having a drive is I'm sure not what Apple had in mind. Oh and my friend told me the portable external DVD drive for it is another $250. Yikes!

This is true, but I also believe Apple had in mind that most of the users buying this machine already have a computer with a CD Drive in them. This computer is not geared toward the average consumer, the MacBook is. No, piracy isn't good, and sometimes (a lot for me) it takes forever to download anything! The Air is a laptop that I wouldn't really want to pickup, just because I don't need it. I really can't see who would need it. Also, the Remote Disc Drive that you can install on other Macs & PCs cannot play DVDs or CDs, but I still don't think that not having a disc drive is going to really hurt the Air. I think CDs are really going out as the universal media, and portable storage drives and downloading straight from the internet is really what's going to happen. I also think Digital Distro is going to win as the HD media, not Blu-Ray.

How long ago did the argument against the floppy seem ridiculous? How cheap is it to get a USB or an IEEE drive enclosure and mount an old DVD or a brand new Blu-Ray drive? Through NewEgg you can get a USB box and DVD/RW drive for about $70.00 including shipping. I could run a computer right now without a built in DVD drive since I already have two USB drive enclosures.

Good thing it comes with iPhoto, that way you save $900 on Photoshop. You could always just use a flash to copy the files to the HD. Then mount the CD/DVD with daemon tools (or Macs equivalent Toast). It would take a total of 2 whole minutes.

Side Note... Let's say you wanted Photoshop even though you had iPhoto. You could just download the thing from Adobe's website after you paid for it. Oh, and Photoshop CS3 Extended is only 460 megs that fits on just 1 CD (700 Megs).
